7. Queer as Folk Song (2:50)
We stayed at home and shut the door
We watched the folk on Channel Four.
Was it reality or art
That Stewart lived without a heart?
Could that young Nathan really cope?
Did Vincent never have a hope?
They called us on the mobile phone
Come to the club, don't stay alone
Life is for living, just you see,
Don't stay inside and watch TV.
But we have got a life. Our joys
Do not need you, redundant boys.

This song has a much simpler structure than the others: there are just two verses for mezzo-soprano, repeating the tune. The first verse is set to arpeggios on the guitar, and the second is sung to the same music but this time with the piano bringing out a strong bass line, and a surprising chord of C major at the climax.
This song makes a response to the preceding one; it is set in the modern Manchester of
Queer as Folk series on
Channel Four Television.
The music is nothing like the brilliant club music of Queer as Folk, with its wonderful conviviality and joie de vivre. The tune has the simplicity and modal flavour of folk music, but with some unusual chord progressions. The urgency of the accompaniment has the energy of the QAF setting, but the song reflects the truth-telling and ironies and questioning about priorities which made the drama so compelling.
The quiet guitar in D minor is then answered by the piano in F major opening the next song, Amadeus.
